Aluminum vs. Stainless Steel vs. Painted Steel Frame Construction
There are 3 basic options when choosing frame construction for your checkweigher, conveyor scale or conveyor. They are aluminum, stainless steel and painted steel. The advantages and disadvantages are listed blow.
Aluminum
Advantages:
- light weight (not much of a benefit with a stationary equipment)
- corrosion resistant and will not rust
- lower cost than stainless steel
- looks good for years
Disadvantages:
- does not have the strength of stainless steel or painted steel
- can develop hairline cracks over time
- will not stand up to cleaning chemicals
- will not comply with food grade requirements
Stainless Steel
Advantages:
- corrosion resistant
- stands up to all types of a variety of cleaning chemicals
- impervious to a variety of pH levels
- maintains an aesthetically pleasing appearance for years
- complies with food grade requirements
Disadvantages:
- most expensive
- heaviest material (not very significant when equipment is stationary)
Painted Steel
Advantages:
- lowest cost
- good strength
Disadvantages:
- will rust after a few years
- does not comply with food grade requirements
- might have to be repainted after a few years to comply with facility requirements
