There are 3 basic options when choosing frame construction for your checkweigher, conveyor scale or conveyor. They are aluminum, stainless steel and painted steel. The advantages and disadvantages are listed blow.

Aluminum

Advantages:

  • light weight (not much of a benefit with a stationary equipment)
  • corrosion resistant and will not rust
  • lower cost than stainless steel
  • looks good for years

Disadvantages:

  • does not have the strength of stainless steel or painted steel
  • can develop hairline cracks over time
  • will not stand up to cleaning chemicals
  • will not comply with food grade requirements

Stainless Steel

Advantages:

  • corrosion resistant
  • stands up to all types of a variety of cleaning chemicals
  • impervious to a variety of pH levels
  • maintains an aesthetically pleasing appearance for years
  • complies with food grade requirements

Disadvantages:

  • most expensive
  • heaviest material (not very significant when equipment is stationary)

Painted Steel

Advantages:

  • lowest cost
  • good strength

Disadvantages:

  • will rust after a few years
  • does not comply with food grade requirements
  • might have to be repainted after a few years to comply with facility requirements
